Master Thief is a skill available in Dragon's Dogma.
Description[]
- "An advanced form of Pilfer that lets the user steal multiple items at once and increases the chances of nabbing rare items."
An advanced version of Pilfer that typically steals two items instead of one.
Notes and tactics[]
In general, the target must be either grappled, Blinded, or Sleeping for this skill to work.
- A few small creatures, some Fauna, and non-aggressive persons like Wandering Pawns may be stolen from without first making them vulnerable.
- Enemy spellcasters (such as Skeleton Sorcerers or Goblin Shamans) can be stolen from whilst they are casting - some spellcasters have nothing to steal under these conditions, whilst others yield items reliably.
- If enemies can be approached whilst 'out of battle stance' (unawares) they may be successfully stolen from.
Successfully using this skill on a target means it will not drop any items upon kill.
- "Breakable" items such as a Cyclops' tusks or the Chimera's snake tail will still drop.
- However, after stealing from an armored Cyclops loot no longer drops from broken armor plates.
- Additional items obtainable from vanquishing enemies in The Everfall (Post-Dragon) do not seem to be stealable, and if an Everfall creature was pilfered, they will not drop the additional rewards on death.
Pawn use[]
Strider pawns will use this skill sparingly.
- Items stolen are added to the Arisen's inventory, not the pawn's.
- Actions or skills that cause staggering or knocking down (including throwing human sized enemies) will increase the chance that a Fighter or Warrior pawn will grapple them, allowing the theft.
- Even when over encumbered, Master Thief and Pilfer can still be used to obtain more items.
Stealing from friends[]
- Stealing does not seem to ever work in The Encampment, Cassardis, or in Gran Soren (see also "Havens") even with sleeping targets
- Wandering Pawns can be stolen in any state when found outside these havens.
- Many road soldiers and gate guards in the open world can be stolen from in the same way, but not all.
- The non-hostile Bandits at The Ruins of Aernst Castle cannot be stolen from, unless they become hostile.
- Warning! Even though these skills deal no damage, using them on the denizens of the Gran Soren is considered a crime.
Failing to steal[]
- Occasionally luck will prevent an item being stolen, but some creatures always give something
- Stealing from people always fails or is impossible in Cassardis, The Encampment, and Gran Soren
- Escortees, temporary allies, peddlers, and some gate guards cannot be stolen from.
Stealable items[]
Fauna[]
- It isn't impossible to steal from Birds, Crows, and Seabirds, However they can be immune to sleep in practice (still fly when sleeping), so players may have to take advantage of respawn distances to make it work.
Humans[]
Soldiers[]
- Occasionally one may encounter out of breath soldiers in a pose as if they had run out of Stamina (one such is found during the quest Call of the Arisen after the Cyclops battle) - these may be stolen from.

Hostile creatures[]
- x2 , x3 etc means Pilfering from the creature gives multiple items (double with Master Thief)
- [a] Stealing when they cast works, but only with certain groups. (They can also be carried whilst casting)
- It is impossible to steal from Evil Eyes, Vile Eyes, Golems, Metal Golems, Griffins, Liches, Wights, Ghosts, Dragons, Hydras, and Archydras.
Bitterblack Isle creatures[]
- x2 , x3 etc means Pilfering from the creature gives multiple items (double with Master Thief)
- [a] Pilferable when emerging from the ground. Requires approach from behind.
- [b] No Debilitation needed while chained.
- [c] No Debilitation needed
- [d] May be stolen from if it has not yet detected the party (may not be successful)
- It is impossible to steal from the Gazer, Eliminators, Daimon, Dark Bishop, Skeleton Brutes, Living Armor, Wraiths, Maneaters, and Dragons.
Exploits[]
- (Exploit) Responds to save reloading or 'Godsbaning' by changing potential drop.
- (Exploit) It's possible to steal items from the same Pawn indefinitely by moving away from them until they are no longer in sight, waiting a few seconds, then approaching again — or by setting up a portcrystal nearby and teleporting to it.
- (Exploit) In Dark Arisen, it is possible to continuously steal from a Prisoner Gorecyclops. Use Master Thief on the chained Gorecyclops in the Midnight Helix, leave and re-enter the room. This resets the four items in the Gorecyclops' possession, and the Arisen can successfully steal from him again. This tactic can be used in early Bitterblack Isle to farm high level items (including Bitterblack Novelty Lv.3 and Bitterblack Gear Lv.3) without much danger.
- Stolen Gorecyclops materials can be sold for a good price, so this method is an easy way to earn Gold early on.
