With money and the right materials, all weapons and armor but jewelry may be enhanced. If you haven't sufficient materials on hand, the remainder will be automatically taken from your storage. In-game description

Enhancing is the process of using particular items to upgrade equipment. Equipment can be enhanced up to 3 levels at a cost of gold and items. Enchanced items are generally referred to as "one star", "two star" or "three star" items.

In Dragon's Dogma, enhancement can be carried out : at Caxton's Armory; Mathias at the Greatwall Encampment; and by Reynard, who wanders Gransys. In Dark Arisen, enchancing can also be done by Barroch on Bitterblack Isle.

Weapons can be enhanced beyond the three star level by Dragonforging, and in Dark Arisen, further enhancement is possible by rarifying.
