For carrying items upon ones person, see Encumbrance.

Carrying is core mechanic in Dragon's Dogma.

Description

Carrying allows the transportation of small and medium sized objects, including people. Whilst carrying objects or creatures stamina is drained, more so if walking, irrespective of whether the carrier is overencumbered.

A wide variety of animate and inanimate objects can be carried - inanimate objects include barrels, boxes, large stones, and pots. Animated (living) creatures can be carried, but generally must be in someway incapacitated first, or surprised.

Most or all small and medium sized foes can be carried, including bandits, saurians, and goblins, as can fauna such as Boar. Almost all dead animals can be carried, including giant rats and spiders.

Any carried living creature will eventually try and succeed in freeing itself - whether friend or foe. Pawns can be carried indefinitely. Incorporeal creatures such as ghosts cannot be grabbed. Giant monsters such as ogres are too big to carry.

Notes

  • For a list of carryable object, see Category:Carryable objects
  • Press (and release) the "grab" button to carry. Pressing (and releasing) again will place the item back on the ground. Pressing an attack button whilst carrying will throw the object.
    • To Grapple (not carry) - press and hold the button (sword vocations only)
  • The augment Conveyance hastens the speed at which a carried thing can be transported.
  • In place of the Grapple, characters can grab, pick up and throw similar or smaller-sized enemies. This will not damage pawns but will injure both the thrown enemy and the one targeted. For example, when fighting against two Goblins, it's possible to kill both by throwing the first at the second. The distance of their flight when thrown and the longer they can be held depends on the character's weight and carrying capacity as well as their stamina.
  • The human inhabitants of Gransys (NPCs) can be carried - this is considered inpolite, and results in a small loss of affinity.
    • A picked up human will drop any items it was carrying - a good way to obtain rare trowels and Work Tables from workmen.
  • Any ally grabbed no longer registers as a vulnerable target:
    • Whilst carried the 'victim' is immune to damage. However, if the Arisen is hit hard enough to break his/her defense, the burden will be dropped.
    • Grabbed pawns cannot be possessed by Phantoms and other ghost type enemies.
    • Grabbing a Frozen pawn will instantly and safely unfreeze them.
  • Barrels can be carried and stacked in some circumstances to gain access to higher places.
  • Boar and other Fauna may be carried and thrown to the pawns, creating a game of 'catch'.
  • Pawns can carry Arisen, when you fall from harpy and they catch you; they may also carry downed allies away from battle and towards the Arisen, for aid.
